Okay to play Devils Advocate:

And If you cut out the blow job from The Brown Bunny, I don't think the movie would have done that much better. Its a bueatiful movie but it is an 'art house mediation,' a genre that has never traditionally done any real business. The fact that it got a fairly big marketing push to begin with just surprised me.

Kevin Smith is a director with an audience that sex or not hasn't really grown much since Dogma. Zack and Miri did Kevin Smith Money.

Regarding this movie -- Jim Carrey is a box office draw, but udiences have never been that accepting of him in low budget prestige films (The Number 23, The Majestic). In fact, audiences in general are pretty reluctant to see big actors in prestige films (A Mighty Heart, Leatherheads). Having his name on the marquee isn't going to help much i think.

It is also about a subject (smoking) that probably has less relevance every year. The 'cigarette companies are evil' meme has been around for decades, and already produced a very good movie on the subject...5 years ago. I think, from my perception at least, that people who smoke are tired of hearing that smoking is bad, and have isolated themselves enough from people who don't, so the don't-ers no longer care much.

Philip Morris as a company no longer exists, after all.

Is the fact that Philip Morris is about a gay relationship going to hurt it in america? Yeah, probably. However if i were a guessing man, i think its box office gross might be under 3 million in america without that.
