Hey Dennis, I found your article on LinkedWorking Los Angeles Group, great article. It made me think though, didn't Twlight started as an indie? Novels written by the writer Stephenie Meyer certainly didn't come from 'Hollywood' or were a recycled piece of childhood to capitalize on. The original Twlight director Catherine Hardwicke only made three relatively critically successful films before. No where near blockbusters. I just think we have some claim in the indie market on Twlight Eclipse right now, the biggest movie of the summer. Hopefully we do.... Hopefully it shows there some room for new creativity.

Paula,
In fact Winter's Bone is one of several other indie films that are emerging with some promise. Right after I did this piece IndieWire came out with an interesting report on the same subject: http://www.indiewire.com/article/2010_mid_year_report_specialty_box_office_winners_and_losers/pem. Very interesting read.

Sheri,
Thanks for the FB link. I'll check it out in a little bit.

I always enjoy your articles and insights. Thanks for posting. Indie films are indeed becoming a force. A current indie film I'm following was shot in a neighboring state, Missouri. "Winter's Bone" was filmed with unknowns, is a low-budget indie, and is gathering buzz. There are several others.
